Overcoming the Blue Glass Challenge: How Xpert BM Delivered for a High-Performance Low E Glass Office Building
In the early design phase of a recent commercial project, our client faced a tough challenge: they needed high-performance architectural glass for a Low E Glass Office Building that met strict local energy codes. Taking Viracon products as a benchmark, the specifications required a U-value of around 1.4 while achieving a specific, vibrant blue exterior tint.
Several suppliers had already submitted sample mockups, but all of them fell short. The colors were either too pale or contaminated with unintended undertones like green or grey.
Finding the Right Match in a Complex Market
When the client reached out to us, we knew this wouldn’t be a straightforward task. From our experience, color-matching glass samples from rival brands involves precise control over color coordinates (L*a*b* values). It requires specialized factory capabilities and deep technical knowledge.

We immediately asked the client to send the physical reference samples and technical datasheets. Our production team began matching the coating on the line. After 2 to 3 weeks of testing, we successfully matched the exterior blue shade. However, a new obstacle arose: the thermal performance parameter couldn’t be met because the benchmark sample was based on an outdated coating recipe no longer in production.
Thinking Outside the Box: An Innovative Hybrid Solution
Just as the project seemed stuck, one of our senior technical experts proposed an unconventional approach. Since the specification called for laminated insulated glass units (insulated safety glass), why not achieve the desired blue tint using a specialized colored PVB interlayer rather than relying solely on the Low-E coating?
Low-E metallic coatings are notoriously difficult to custom-tint without altering performance values. By shifting our perspective and combining a standard high-efficiency Low-E coating with a custom-tinted structural PVB interlayer, we could achieve the exact target blue color while retaining the mandatory U-value of 1.4.
We presented this modified laminated double pane insulated windows solution to the client, and they were thrilled with the concept. Our technicians jumped back into sampling, and within two weeks, a new batch of physical samples was ready.
Persistence Pays Off
Good things take time. Although the samples were ready, the project faced unexpected delays due to financing and site inspection hold-ups, putting progress on pause for over six months. When the client finally received and inspected the physical mockups, they expressed complete satisfaction with both the color accuracy and thermal performance.
Today, production and site delivery are fully completed, and the building is undergoing its final commissioning phase.
