Heat Treated Glass
What is 5mm Toughened Glass Panel?
5mm toughened glass panel, also called 3/16 tempered glass panel, which is a high-strength safety glass that has undergone thermal processing to improve durability and resistance to impact, heat, and pressure. Unlike standard glass, it breaks into small, blunt fragments that significantly reduce the risk of injury.
Why Choose 5mm Toughened Glass Panel from Xpert Building Material?
Find building materials is about more than just finding the lowest price—it’s about reliability and supply chain integrity. Here is why contractors and architectural firms choose our 5mm Toughened Glass Panels:
Certified Structural Integrity: Engineered to exceed ASTM and CE standards. Our 5mm panels deliver optimum flatness, strength, and fragmentation safety, helping you finish projects ahead of schedule.
Rapid Technical Response: In construction, delay equals cost. Whether you need precise weight calculations for hardware or custom notch drawings for complex installations, our engineering team delivers data within 24 hours, not days.
End-to-End Quality Control: We control the process from raw float glass to final tempering and coating. This vertical integration guarantees a stable supply and consistent pricing, eliminating market shortage risks.
Seamless International Delivery: “Broken on arrival” is never an option. With heavy-duty protective crating and full customs coordination, we make global procurement as seamless as buying from a local vendor.

FAQs for Order 3/16 Tempered Glass Panel
No. Once glass goes through the thermal tempering process, it cannot be altered. Any attempt to cut, drill, or sand the glass will cause the entire panel to shatter instantly into small, blunt pieces. All custom cuts, holes, and edge work must be specified before fabrication.
Depending on how the glass will be used, you can typically choose from:
Seamed Edge: The sharp edges are sanded down to make it safe to handle. Best if the edges will be hidden in a frame or channel.
Flat Polish: A clean, square edge with a small 45-degree chamfer on the top and bottom. Ideal for exposed edges like shelves or tabletops.
Pencil Polish: A smooth, rounded, shiny edge that resembles the shape of a pencil.
Beveled Polish: A decorative option where the edges are angled and polished downward (usually ranging from 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ wide).
Due to the cutting and tempering process, standard industry cutting tolerance is +/- 1/16 inch. Please keep this slight margin in mind when measuring tight spaces, such as recessed window frames or cabinet tracks.
Generally, no. For frameless shower doors or large glass panels where structural integrity relies entirely on the glass, industry safety standards typically require a minimum thickness of 3/8″ or 1/2″. 3/16″ glass is too thin and flexible for frameless applications, though it is sometimes used in fully framed shower enclosures.
Tempered glass can withstand temperatures up to approximately 240°C (464°F), making it excellent for kitchen backsplashes or panels near moderate heat. However, it should not be used as the primary protective glass on wood stoves or fireplaces where it comes into direct contact with open flames. For those extreme applications, a ceramic glass (like PyroCeram) is required.
Always use a heavy-duty steel measuring tape rather than a fabric one. Measure your space in three places (top, middle, bottom for height; left, middle, right for width) and use the smallest measurement. If the glass needs to fit tightly inside a frame, we recommend subtracting 1/8″ from your total width and height to ensure a comfortable fit.
3/16″ glass weighs approximately 2.45 pounds per square foot. You can calculate the estimated weight of your panel by multiplying its total square footage by 2.45. This is highly useful for determining the weight capacity of brackets or hinges.
